  110. distribution network in place to get it out, brand name recognition, and a
  111. captive advertising audience in QST.  How on earth is a competitor going to
  112. match that?

  202. Well if computers can check grammar these days, they could probably do 
  203. a pretty good job of picking out posts that are business oriented.  The
  204. problem here probably is that they would reject many posts that were
  205. not really business oriented in the process due to similarity of language
  206. constructs.  However this does not seem to be too high of a price to pay.

  322. that there's no market for the ARRL Repeater Directory.  As stated prev-
  323. iously, who really wants to carry around a bunch of 8-1/2 x 11 inch 
  324. sheets of paper, anyway?

  326. All of you people out there - have you seen that incredibly neat repeater
  327. MAP book out there?  It shows up at hamfests all the time, and MANY times
  328. have I considered getting a copy, because it's a lot easier to look at 
  329. a map, compare it to your road map, and SEE what repeaters may be within
  330. range.  The ARRL seems to not be too worried about that one, and it 
  331. probably isn't cutting into the league's profits too much.

  336. ARRL does for its members, but,

  378. I said in another post, I was not feeling good this morning and
  379. misinterpreted the messages their anonymous ftp site sent me
  380. before I got kicked off. I assume they were either having
  381. problems, or doing backups, and I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

  384. ftp site (ftp.std.com) with amateur radio specific topics. Which

  396. The proverbial friend of mine has two transformers.  They are 110/220 VAC
  397. input, 50 VAC output and rated at 15 amps.

  399. He needs 25 volts, not 50.  The obvious solution is to feed 110 into the
  400. 220 input windings.

  402. Question:  Do we have to de-rate the output current to 7.5 amps?

  407. I doubt the I**2 * R heating of the windings is an issue here.  What about
  408. saturation of the core?  Or saturation of the core?  Eddy current heating?

  496. How about providing the grid square location as a locator.  That would sure
  497. make things easier to look up for a given route one might be planning
  498. on driving through.

  500. Since most repeaters (at least the 2m nes) cover areas in excess of
  501. the grid square they are located in, using a grid square location
  502. would, I think, offer an interesting and useful approach.

  504. As a concluding note, I again offer the information that no one can
  505. copyright specific facts.  The FACT that the K2GDD repeater on
  506. 146.895 is located in Morristown, NJ and is an open repeater is
  507. purely factual data that is not protected by any copyright.  As such,
  508. gathering such data (IMHO) from any source to populate a software
  509. database that is not printed out in any format resembling an existing
  510. printed directory, would not (again, by my layman interpretation)
  511. be a copyright violation.  Think about it...if it was, then once
  512. a directory was created by anyone, then no on else would be able
  513. to create another database using the same information.  That's
  514. just not the case.  Almanacs contain lots of information as
  515. reference sources.  A chronological list of US president with the
  516. dates they served is not anything protectable by copyright.

  545. Uh, Greg...hate to burst your bubble, but the ARRL _isn't_ the official 
  546. frequency coordination authority. It has explicitly avoided accepting that 
  547. role.

  552. the data straight from the repeater directory to disk? If so, that _is_ a 
  553. copyright violation. They can't copyright the facts, but they can copyright 
  554. the collection of facts into a whole. Just ask Compuserve.
